Making your solar panels winter-ready is something very few people think about, but it’s extremely important. With fall just starting and winter right around the corner, it’s wise to have your solar panels ready before Thanksgiving.
The following are five tips to help you prepare your solar panels for winter. These are things that should be done every year.
- Inspect and Clean the Panels
While your outside water is still available, remove all debris, dirt, and even small patches of grime. Use a very soft brush or a microfiber mop — never a high-pressure washer. Check for any damage and make sure nothing is blocking the sunlight. If you notice cracks or anything unusual, contact your installer right away, especially if your panels are still under warranty.
- Check Electrical Connections
If you see any frayed wiring, some of our little rodent friends may have chewed through the cables. If you spot anything suspicious, be sure to contact your installer or a local professional.
- Angle and Snow Considerations
You might want to reach out to your installer if you think your panels could use an adjustment. A slight tilt of 10–15 degrees can help snow slide off more easily and improve sunlight capture during the winter months.
- Check Your Battery (if you have one)
Inspect your battery and make sure it’s in a temperature-controlled area above 32°F. Also, check the charge and discharge settings — cold temperatures can reduce capacity, and your inverter or app may have a “winter mode” option to optimize performance.
- Monitor Output Regularly
Make it part of your routine to check your system once the weather cools down. You’ll naturally see less power generation in winter, but monitoring regularly will ensure you’re still getting the most out of your solar setup.
The most important thing to remember is to contact your installer or a qualified professional if you see anything that might compromise your system’s performance or safety.
